With Mo'ne Davis having so much success in the Little League World Series, it would seem a matter of time before women are playing pro baseball. Be it their own league or in the Majors. After all hasn't there already been a female football place kicker? I was watching a game and mind pondering the notion of women playing in the MLB, and I noticed all the guys scratching, spitting and chewing. I wondered how women would take to that. Would baseball have to be cleansed of all scratching, spitting and chewing? Or at least toned down. Or would women ballplayers perhaps spit and chew even more than their male team mates in an effort to fit in.
I met one women while I was attending college in Ely, Minnesota. She claimed that baseball in fact, should have its name changed to 'Scratch. Spit, and Chew.' Actually it made sense, because more of that happens during a ballgame than pitching and hitting combined.
There would need to be new rules. Like the other day, a trainer came out to the mound to trim the laces on the pitchers glove. There is a rule that they have to be trimmed so as not to distract the hitter. I noticed Mo'ne Davis braids were rather long and whipped around when she threw home. Wasn't that distracting to the hitters? Probably not anymore than the Redsox players beards are.
Myself, I'd rather see women have their own league, similar to the PGA and LPGA. If women became the majority of ball players, I think they would ban spitting and chewing. I think there are ballplayers that wouldn't be able to play ball if they couldn't spit. I'm a bit surprised that there are no Sabermetrics on this topic.
